The Five Minute Therapist

BOOK EXCERPTS

INTRODUCTION

Bookstores are filled with self-help books. People read them, try their recommendations, and then go back to their old behavioral patterns. For example, if you tend to procrastinate, even after making lists and setting priorities, in times of stress it is common to revert to the old behavior. The reason these books may not work is that they are consciously trying to change your conscious behavior. The chances of succeeding are about 1 in 20.

"Success" lies when you change the subconscious behavior. The purpose of this book is to show you how you can change your subconscious behavior by altering your handwriting. This is based on the theory that in order to write, your hand must get a message from your brain. Alternatively, by writing in a different manner, one can send a message to the brain, to the subconscious, to behave differently or to perceive certain situations differently.

Try this experiment. Write your name on a piece of paper (your signature). Now write your name smaller than the first time. Now write your name smaller than the other two times. How do you feel? Do you feel tight, cramped, more focused?

Now write your name larger than the first time, now larger than that one, and finally, larger than all the other times. How do you feel now? Do your feel more expansive, sloppier, out of control? The point of this exercise is to show you that when you write in a different manner, you tend to feel differently.

This book is not intended as a cure for the mentally ill, those under the professional care of a psychiatrist, psychotherapist, or other professionals in this area. This book is rather intended for the person who does not want to be a victim and for those who want to take responsibility for themselves to solve their own problems. It is for the person who wants to be proactive with respect to life's challenges. We are living in a time where everyone is a "victim." It is always someone other than me causing the problem.

One has to be proactive, not reactive to life's challenges. One solution is changing one's perception of a particular situation. This book provides the tools to change one's perception and alter certain character flaws. This book is for the person who wants to be better, not bitter.
